FOUNTAIN of every Blessing!

FOUNTAIN of every Blessing!
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
Fountain of every blessing
I adore You
I love You
And with a lively sorrow for my sins,
I offer You this poor Heart of mine.
Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to Your will.
Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in and for You.
Protect me in danger,
Comfort me in affliction,
Give me health in mind and body,
Your assistance in my temporal needs,
Your blessing on all that I do,
And the grace of a holy death in You.
Amen.

*this is a reprint of an older blog posting! The phrase "a love for us that never ends" is from the "Anna Post Video"

When I was 15 after the first exhilaration of my conversion experience and seeing miracles and so forth, one day it all came crashing down to earth. I began to falter again under the weaknesses and burdens I had, feeling all bound up with all the negative patterns that had built up for so long. I did what I had the first time: I fell to my knees, admitted my helplessness and turned to the Lord in trust. “Make me free”, was the phrase that kept recurring. I picked up a prayer card and began to recite the prayer there. It was the Sacred Heart Prayer from the Sacred Heart Fathers from Racine, Wisconsin [the same ones who used to give out those metal Sacred Heart Auto League car stickers]. I had been saying the prayer every day, but now I prayed it with desperation and determined to DO something to make my trust REAL; I would do the First Friday Devotion thing and to go to Mass every day. Here is part of the prayer:

“Most Sacred Heart of Jesus…I love you…I offer you this poor heart of mine, make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to your will…grant me the grace of a holy death..”

I had prayed it before, but now with poverty and desperation. And then it happened: a song started coming to me, a verse and a chorus, five times. (Eventually we cut this to four verses for performance.)  Several of the verses were reminders that we need to open up to others and see more than ourselves, something I sorely needed [and still need!] to do. It truly was a freeing experience. I should just let a loving Heart look after me and concentrate on living and loving.

A few years later after I’d done some more trusting and ministering, the final rousing coda came to me in a rush once. It’s okay to pray for a holy death, but that comes by LIVING with all you’ve got.

The amusing genesis of the song actually came before what I began with here. I went to a big Charismatic conference and everyone was engaged in praise and I was really throwing myself into it – it was so freeing! My eyes were closed and I was concentrating intently when I began to notice people laughing. As I opened up my eyes and looked around I noticed everyone else was sitting down looking at me. HOW EMBARASSING! (I seem to have a special talent for embarassing myself!) I was red-faced and crestfallen as I sat down; it’s always been one of my biggest fears, not knowing the etiquette of situations, afraid of offending or making a fool of myself. The very kind speaker said something like “Thank the Lord for freedom.”

Now, after this, a man I trusted deeply came up to me – I’m embarassed to say I’ve forgotten who it is!- and said simply, “The Lord wants to give you a song on freedom”. Now, I know I trusted the guy, because that’s the kind of thing you would have to! With a very simple reaction I ran to the Chapel, knelt down, furrowed my brow intensely and waited expectantly. I imagine I came out of my crouch once in a while to sneak a peek skyward to see if anything was dropping down directly upon me. When nothing happened, I chalked it up to a mistake and forgot all about it. It was maybe a couple of months after this that I got “Make Me Free”, and I recalled that incident. I don’t know if it was the suggestion of it that planted the idea; that’s certainly possible. But this song is just so darn good, I’m inclined to believe maybe the guy did have a genuine inspiration.

The insight it gives is crucial to everyone. We’ve got to let God be God and just learn to love and trust! That’s pretty simple; it’s not always easy. Lord, help us to be free by living in your Love!

P.S. The chef at Oblates was Roy McKay; I did the pots and pans and worked for him. This was his favorite song and I did it just for him a few times and he was always pulling me out to do it for someone. He had real insight into people and their motives. I grew to love old time country in his kitchen. ( And I'll never forget his green mashed potatoes on St. Patty's!) He has since passed on, but his example and memory is a treasured one for me and many who knew him.

1. Home is Where the Heart Is
2. Forever
3. Carry On (live)

Living Waters on Living Witnesses - Podcast

Mary Graham has been a friend of Living Waters in the past; she had played some of our music in the original incarnation of “Adoration Radio”.  She has since pioneered a new show on Real Live Radio, entitled, “Living Witnesses”. (It is a broadcast, but, also, podcast; you can go anytime & click on the link & listen to an episode at any time.) The focus of the show is to allow Catholics to recount faith stories & blessings in an easy, conversational way. (I had the privilege of using this service when I followed their “33 Days to Morning Glory” Consecration series.)

Well! Mary contacted me and asked me to be on the show, to share some of the faith stories which I had shared on our band blog. She called me on a Monday morning and we did the recording over the phone. I talked about my conversion experience as a teen, a couple of miracle stories, and how I got the song “Make Me Free”. I then told how I met Julia and how she encouraged me to send “Peter the Rock” to John Paul II. In the last section of the hour, we talked about my recent experience with “Do What He Tells You to Do”, and how it tied into my consecration and Matthew’s health issues. Finally, I remembered back to 1974 and how I got the song “Jesus”. The basic theme was the immense Mercy of God to a poor teen, and how Our Lady, given to us as a mother from the Cross, has been so merciful in leading me and mine to The Source of Mercy, changing my water into wine. It was a wonderful conversation, and Mary Graham made me feel very comfortable.

At the head of this article, I have a link to a playlist on ReverbNation of the four songs played during the show in the order they appeared, as well as a link to the show. EnJOY!

A Faith Story: The Story of the Rain

A Faith Story: The Story of the Rain

August 24, 2010 at 5:32 pm

Occasionally, I thought it would be a good idea to share some of the faith stories we have had.  First up, something that happened to me during the time when I was meeting some of those who would form Living Waters: "The Miracle of the Rain"

The teenage years are the classic time for conversion experiences.  There are too many examples to list like St. Francis, the Buddha, and so on.   When I changed, I experienced several things that I can only describe as 'miracles'.  My theory is that I was so screwed up and needy, that I needed these special signs to help me in a special way.  This  incident calls to mind the classic saying of St. Augustine, 'Believe so that you may understand'.

After my conversion experience, I changed a great deal.  Although I never talked about it, a lot of my peer group noticed that I was "into God".  Now, most of these guys were from poor families like me, but they were well into drugs and crime:  this WAS the Seventies!  Heroin, LSD, pot, booze were all part of their scene.  I somehow had managed to avoid all that.

That summer, we were all enrolled in a program in the city of Augusta, Maine [that's the capital, by the way; it has street lights and paved roads!]  This program was basically meant to keep delinquents busy; it was called the Community Action Program or CAP!  Most of the summer was spent doing busywork like building trails in the woods.

One week, we were working at an all-girls private school called Oak Grove-Coburn School.  Let me tell you, that place was filthy!  Well, one day in particular, our supervisor had to take off for a while.  We were supposed to be weeding a garden.  There was one other friend of mine, a Pentecostal kid, who probably would have worked with me, but he was sick that day.  So, it ended up that I was the only one working; I had a conscience now.

Meanwhile, all the other guys were sitting under a tree, smoking pot and laughing at me.  They snickered and giggled, pointing at me with their hands over their mouths.

One of them finally shouted out to me, "Hey!  If there's a God, make it rain!" and they all dissolved into uncontrollable laughter.

Now, I definitely should NOT have done this, but I reacted and blurted out, "OK! I'll pray!  He'll make it rain!"

Immediately, right as the words were coming out of my mouth, I knew I had made a horrible mistake.  (Please, understand, it was NOT the right thing to do.  We don't tell God what to do; He leads us.)  So, I prayed silently within myself, "Lord, you don't have to bail me out of this if you don't want to.  I believe in you no matter what.  I don't need any signs.  But, if it is your will, please show these boys you are real and make it rain.  It's OK with me if you don't." That is the gist of how I prayed.

You have to realize, this WAS a sunny day.  So, it would be a real miracle if anything happened.  Suddenly - I swear on the Bible this is true - dark clouds started to approach us seemingly from all the horizons.  The guys under the tree began to get very nervous.  One of them looked at his watch and said to me, "We'll give you five minutes".  In two minutes, it was pouring and we had to run under one of those concrete overhangs because the school was locked.  One of the guys commented, "THAT was FREAKY, man!" (This WAS the Seventies!)

Please don't tell anyone 'Mr. Lajoie made it rain'.  I can't do it.  I can barely walk and chew gum.  GOD obviously did this because he always hears the cry of the poor, and I think I was pretty poor at the time in many ways.  Miracles are only signs pointing to the real miracle which is that we can know God and have his grace inside us, that we poor sinners can learn to love like Him.  I hope this story gives you confidence to trust Him.

Years later, Deacon Bob Allanach, an Oblate of Mary Immaculate religious, asked me to go up to Maine to provide music for an Ordination.  I said, "Sure!"  He said, "The problem is I have to stop in Augusta at the courthouse to meet with some juvenile delinquents I'm working with.  Do you mind?"  "NO!  Not at all!  I'm from Augusta.  I don't mind going there." [*note* Many years later I ended up teaching Bob Allanach's nephew at my school!]

Well, when we walked into the Courthouse, guess who these 'juvenile delinquents' were:  MY FRIENDS!!  One of them, named Gove told me he was going to be baptized the next week by Brother Bob.  Most of the others were well on their way to the three ends of substance abuse:  prison, insanity or the grave.  It's funny how we all saw the same thing and it didn't help all of us.  I guess it's all in the response to the invitation God gives to each of us.

A far greater miracle for me was the miracle of music and friendship.  I had just met Chuck Rossignol, the Bourques, the Gagnons etc. and I was learning how to share and pray. This is the real miracle called Grace.
